- Use a simple homemade weed killer. Weeds prove to have a really bad effect on a garden and to eliminate that you can use a simple solution made at home. Now, be warned because this solution can be harmful for the grass so use it sidewalk and borders where there isn’t any grass or flower. All you need to make the solution is one gallon of white vinegar, one cup of salt and a tablespoon of liquid dish soap.
- There are certain invasive plants that tend to grow very large and cause a problem in the growth of other plants. To limit their root growth there is a very simple thing that you can do. Just cut the bottom part of a plastic pot and bury it in the ground, then plant the invasive plant. This technique will help in controlling the invasive plant.
- When indoor plants are watered it tends to create a huge mess due to the soil. To prevent that you can use coffee filters. Line your pots with coffee filter so that the soil doesn’t fall out. In this way, the water is drained and the dirt is also kept contained.
- Instead of throwing away your vegetable stock or the vegetable cooking water, you can simply use it for your plants. This stock has a lot of nutrients which prove to have amazing effects on the growth of the plants.
- While working in the garden, dirt tends to stick under the fingers and is difficult to remove later. To prevent that, just dug your nails in bar of soap. In this way, no dirt will enter your nails and after working you can easily get the soap out.
- Moisture can be retained for a long time by just adding a diaper at the bottom of the potted plant. This method is cheap and efficient.

- Providing your plants with calcium can prove to be a great boost to their growth. And there is a very easy and way to do that. Just grind some eggshells into a powder and sprinkle that all over your garden. Eggshells are rich in calcium and will help promote growth in your garden.
- Moving heavy pots is hard work and requires energy. But instead of wasting your energy on moving heavy pots you can do a simple thing and make them lighter. Just add foam peanuts in your pot. This will make your pot lighter and will also improve drainage. Just be sure to add a foundation of landscape fabric so that the soil doesn’t shift down.
- When dealing with muddy soil or anything grubby just spray your shovel with a teflon or silicone lubricant and the sticky stuff will slide off. This will definitely make your work a lot easier and a lot less messy.
- Remove the over ripe vegetables and fruits, as soon as possible, as they attract pests.
- Paint the handles of your garden tools in bright color, so that they are easy to spot. Also keep a mailbox in your garden to store some small tools and stuff.
- Plants like garlic, onion and chrysanthemum act like insect repellants. So grow these plants around your garden to make sure the insects stay away.
- Salt deposits on a clay pot is very common. To remove those deposits just add equal quantity of white vinegar, water and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Spray this solution on the pots and then scrub them. This will help in removing the salt deposits.
- Use recycled products in your garden to save money and to be more eco-friendly. One way to do this is to use rainwater for watering the garden and for some other needs.
- Be creative and use unconventional things as planters and pots. You can use a dressing table, a shoe rack, some old shoes and even old bottles. This will help in adding a nice touch to your garden.
- If you are a beginner, start out with some easy and cheap plants and herbs. Do not get over ambitious.
- Spread a 1 or 2 inch layer of mulch around each plant to prevent the garden vegetables from getting dirty. This will also help you in keeping the weeds out.
